12 fishermen honoured in Ramanathapuram for rescuing sea turtles


Twelve fishermen who had rescued turtles that had accidentally got trapped in their fishing nets by leaving them back into sea were honoured by Ramanathapuram Collector Simranjeet Singh Kahlon here on Wednesday.

The Collector presented to them ‘Kadal Kappaan’ (Sea Saviour) award along with ₹1,000 in to each of them on behalf of Kadalosai FM 90.4.

A total of 124 turtles have been rescued by 63 fishermen of the district till date, the statement said.

Various awareness programmes were being conducted to conserve sea turtles by the Department of Forest. This includes monitoring collection of turtle eggs, storing them in hatcheries and leaving the hatchlings back into the sea with the assistance of voluntary organisations.

Wildlife Warden Akhil Tambi, Assistant Director, Fisheries, Sivakumar, and Gayathri of Community Radio were among those who were present.
