Social Welfare and Women Empowerment Minister P. Geetha Jeevan stated that ‘Thozhi’ hostels for women are being set up at 26 locations across Tamil Nadu, while addressing the media in Thoothukudi on Sunday.
She said that currently six new ‘Thozhi’ hostels have been established across the state. Additionally, 10 hostels in Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Vellore, Viluppuram and other areas have been renovated and are operational. Furthermore, three hostels, in Tiruchi, Coimbatore and Ayanambakkam, obtained from Adi Dravidar Welfare Department have been renovated and are functioning.
She noted that at present a total of 19 hostels are operational, while construction of 26 hostels are underway at various stages and three hostels are under renovation in Tiruppur, Madurai and Coimbatore.
Ms. Geetha Jeevan observed that under the ‘Pudhumai Penn’ scheme a total of 5,29,728 students pursuing arts and science, engineering and other courses have been benefitted. Similarly under the ‘Tamil Pudhalvan’ scheme a total of 3,92,449 students have been benefitted to date.
