As Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ) completes 30 glorious years, music composer Lalit Pandit looked back on the frenzy that surrounded the film’s soundtrack at the time of its release. In a conversation with Spotify, the composer—who, along with his brother Jatin Pandit, created the timeless music of the Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol starrer—recounted an unforgettable incident that captured the scale of its success.

Sharing his memory, Lalit said, “When the movie released, we got to know that the music had become a massive hit. Because in those days, music was released first, and then the promos. One day Adi (Aditya Chopra) asked us to come over and said he would take us somewhere. He took us to Western Outdoor, towards Fort. Rhythm House was the main hub for music selling and everything.”

Describing what he witnessed, Lalit continued, “He parked the car and showed us the huge line outside Rhythm House—a really long line. He told us that they were all buying DDLJ’s music. The sellers were only allowing three cassettes per person, and people were requesting not to limit them to just three. They wanted to buy 10! I had never seen anything like that.”

The composer’s anecdote perfectly reflects the cultural impact of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, not just as a film but as a musical phenomenon. Songs like ‘Tujhe Dekha Toh Yeh Jaana Sanam,’ ‘Mehndi Laga Ke Rakhna,’ and ‘Mere Khwabon Mein’ continue to resonate with audiences even today—three decades after their release.
