Fifty-two persons, including 23 students, tested positive for narcotic drug consumption, following 1,000 screening tests conducted across hostels, Paying Guest (PG) accommodation and other places in Mangaluru on December 30 and 31, according to city police.
In a press note, Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy said the city police undertook a proactive and preventive enforcement drive to ensure a safe and drug-free environment for citizens. As part of the operation, the police conducted drug tests on 1,000 suspected individuals based on credible intelligence and behavioural indicators.
Mr. Reddy noted that out of 52 persons, 25 were students (two locals, 23 from outside the district), while 27 were non-students (17 labourers, 10 in various occupations). Counselling and legal action are being handled responsibly and sensitively, he added.
Three arrested
The City police apprehended three alleged drug peddlers in two separate cases. One accused was found with 50 grams of MDMA on December 30, while two other accused were found with 200 grams of MDMA on December 31. The three accused persons have criminal backgrounds and were under close police surveillance. The arrests marked an important step in dismantling drug supply networks, Mr. Reddy said.
The exercise helped police understand consumption patterns and strengthen future preventive efforts. It has provided valuable insight into the profile of consumers, which enables police to refine their strategy in catching drug peddlers. The city police are committed to safeguarding youth, protecting communities and ensuring that celebrations in the city remain joyful, safe and drug-free, Mr. Reddy said.
