849 motorists booked for drunk driving in special drives across Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Malkajgiri


A total of 849 motorists were booked for driving under the influence of alcohol during special enforcement drives conducted by the traffic police in Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Malkajgiri over the weekend.

Hyderabad traffic police conducted a two-day special drive on March 13 and 14, and booked 364 drivers. Of them, 313 were riding two-wheelers, 25 were driving three-wheelers and 26 were driving four-wheelers and other vehicles.

Police said 66 offenders recorded blood alcohol concentration levels between 30 mg and 50 mg, while 174 had levels between 51 mg and 100 mg. Another 68 offenders recorded levels between 101 mg and 150 mg, and 29 had levels between 151 mg and 200 mg. Twelve offenders had levels between 201 mg and 250 mg, eight had levels between 251 mg and 300 mg and seven recorded levels above 300 mg.

In Malkajgiri commissionerate, traffic police apprehended 223 offenders during weekend checks. Of them, 194 were riding two-wheelers, eight were driving three-wheelers and 21 were driving four-wheelers.

Officials said 204 offenders recorded blood alcohol concentration levels between 36 mg and 200 mg, 10 offenders had levels between 201 mg and 300 mg and nine recorded levels between 301 mg and 550 mg.

Cyberabad traffic police booked 262 offenders during a similar drive. Among them, 205 were riding two wheelers, five were driving three-wheelers, 50 were driving four-wheelers and two were operating heavy vehicles.

Police said 233 offenders recorded blood alcohol concentration levels between 36 mg and 200 mg, 19 had levels between 201 mg and 300 mg and 10 had levels between 301 mg and 550 mg.

Officials said all the offenders will be produced before the court. Police reiterated that drunk driving is a serious offence and warned that if a person driving under the influence of alcohol causes a fatal accident, the individual can be booked under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, which carries a punishment of up to 10 years of imprisonment along with a fine.

During the week from March 8 to March 14, courts disposed of 238 drunk driving cases in Malkajgiri commissionerate, of which eight offenders were given fine and jail, 11 were sentenced to fine along with social service and 219 were imposed fine. In Cyberabad commissionerate, 187 cases were disposed of during the week from March 9 to March 14, with two offenders receiving fine and jail, 23 sentenced to fine and social service and 162 imposed fine.
