Adolescence star Owen Cooper has become the youngest male to win an acting award at the Emmys. Period.
The 15-year-old actor won for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or TV Movie.
He led the breakout Netflix limited drama as a 13-year-old Jamie Miller, who is arrested on suspicion of a gruesome murder.
Owen thanked the cast, crew, and his parents for his acceptance speech. “Honestly, when I started these drama classes a couple years back, I didn’t expect to be in the United States, never mind here,” he said. “But I think tonight proves that if you listen and you focus and you step out of your comfort zone, you can achieve anything in life.”
“I was nothing about three years ago and I’m here now. Who cares if you get embarrassed?” Owen continued. “Anything can be possible.”
Owen broke the record previously held in the category by Michael A. Goorjian, who was 23 years old when he won for David’s Mother in 1994.
16-year-old Scott Jacoby previously held the record for being the youngest male actor ever to win a PrimeTime Emmy for his role in The Certain Summer in 1973.
An incredible feat, Owen had previously never worked as an actor before auditioning for Adolescence, Netflix’s second-most-watched English-language series.
A historic win in more ways than one, it really resonated with everybody on the internet:
