The Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Veterinary Education and Research (RIVER) launched a mobile app to strengthen rabies surveillance and reporting at an event held in connection with World Rabies Day.
The ‘Rabi-Track RIVER App’ was developed by RIVER in collaboration with the Atal Incubation Centre, Puducherry Technological University.
Formally launching the app, Yasin M. Choudhary, Secretary, Animal Husbandry and Chairman of the Pondicherry Veterinary College Society (PVCS), stressed the importance of adopting a ‘One Health’ approach for tackling the rabies disease.

Among the dignitaries present were S. Govindarajan, Mission Director, Puducherry State Health Society, G. Latha Mangeshkkar, Director, Department of Animal Husbandry and Animal Welfare, S. Guneswari, State Nodal Officer (National Rabies Control Programme), IGGGH&PGI; V. Bhanu Rekha, Professor and Head, Department of Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology, V.J. Ajay Kumar and M. Nithya Quintoil, Assistant Professor of Department of Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology.
On the occasion, prizes and certificates were distributed to the winners of photography and short video contest on rabies prevention held for students of Indira Gandhi College of Arts and Science. The initiative aimed to engage students in spreading awareness among the public, a press note from RIVER said.
Technical sessions led by experts held subsequently covered a wide range of topics including rabies immunization, animal reservoirs, diagnostic techniques, and the objectives of the National Rabies Control Programme (NRCP). The sessions highlighted the importance of timely vaccination and post-exposure treatment in saving lives.
The observance was organised with funding support of the National Rabies Control Programme and the Puducherry State Health Mission. The event concluded with the screening of a rabies awareness video produced by RIVER, focusing on prevention, responsible pet ownership, and community cooperation towards achieving the national goal of eliminating rabies by 2030.
