Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president K. Selvaperunthagai on Thursday (October 2, 2025) accused the BJP of “playing politics” over the tragic stampede at actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) rally in Karur, which claimed 41 lives.

Speaking at a signature campaign at Udhagamandalam in the Nilgiris against what the Congress termed ‘vote theft,’ Mr. Selvaperunthagai criticised the BJP for forming an eight-member committee led by Lok Sabha MP, Hema Malini, contending she did not know even the north from south of Karur.

“The government has already formed a one-member commission headed by Justice Aruna Jagadeesan. This commission will look into the circumstances that led to the tragic events in Karur,” said Mr. Selvaperunthagai. He charged that the committee formed by the BJP was only designed to play politics over the graves of the people who died in Karur.

He criticised them for blaming the police for the events that unfolded in Karur, stating it was on video that the police acted very professionally. “There are even videos attesting to the sincere efforts of the police during the tragedy,” he said. “On the one hand, the BJP is indulging in vote theft and on the other, they are playing politics over the graves of the dead,” alleged Mr. Selvaperunthagai.

He also commended the government and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin for the handling of the tragedy. “If they do not want to commend the Chief Minister, then they should remain silent,” he said, adding that despite the continuing violence in Manipur, no fact-finding committee was formed by the Union government to visit the State.
