The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (Non Political) has announced a State-wide campaign from December 15 to “expose the anti-farmers policies” of the government in Tamil Nadu.
P. Ayyakkannu, president and, P.R. Pandian, Co-ordinator of SKM(NP) Tamil Nadu chapter, told presspersons here on Thursday that the campaign would be conducted in all districts in coordination with leaders of farmers’ associations.
Putting forth a series of demands of farmers, they urged the State government to open more direct purchase centres (DPCs) to procure paddy and not to reject paddy brought by farmers on grounds of high moisture content. Paddy procured from farmers should be moved from the DPCs on a day-to-day basis.
Lack of planning had resulted in the piling up of kuruvai paddy stock at DPCs in the Cauvery delta, they charged and claimed that the frequent transfer of Managing Director of the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation was affecting the procurement process.
Loans and fertilizers
The farmers leaders alleged slackness in sanction of crop loans and distribution of fertilizers. The State government had failed to allocate adequate funds for irrigation schemes. The release of water under the Rule Curve system had caused problems in distribution of water for irrigation to various areas, they alleged.
The Tamil Nadu Land Consolidation (for Special Purposes) Act, 2023, would help corporates to acquire fertile lands and waterbodies, Mr. Pandian said and observed that no other State in the country had brought in such a law.
