Kanniyakumari District Collector R. Alagumeena has issued guidelines for manufacturers of sweets and savouries to ensure the delivery of healthy and hygienic products to consumers.
According to the press release, manufacturers of confectioneries must clearly indicate the manufacturing and expiry dates in the sweet boxes. Products should be sold in hygienic conditions, free from insects and germs. In addition, only permitted artificial food colours should be used. Traders are required to display the type of oil or ghee used in making sweets and savouries at their shops.
They were also instructed to use clean water for cooking and urged to obtain a Water Analysis Report. While packing sweets and savouries, only Food Grade Container and Packing Material should be used. All food manufactures and sellers should be licensed or registered under the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006.
These regulations also apply to temporary stalls and households set up during Deepavali, which must obtain the necessary licenses and registration certificate as per the food safety laws. Failure to comply will result in strict action. Consumers were also advised to purchase sweets from registered shops and to buy sweets that have proper labelling details.
Consumers can report on food quality issues in the Food Safety Department’s whatsapp number 94440-42322 or District Food Safety Department Office number 04652-276786. Complaints can also be registered in foodsafety.tn.gov.in or TN Food Safety Consumer application.
