SFI, UDSF claim victory in college union polls in Kozhikode

The Students’ Federation of India (SFI) has claimed to have won students’ union polls in 30 of the 49 colleges in Kozhikode district where elections were held on organisational basis for the current academic year, while leaders of the United Democratic Students’ Front (UDSF), a coalition of the Kerala Students’ Union (KSU) and the Muslim Students’ Federation (MSF), claimed to have emerged victorious in close to 60 colleges. The elections in colleges affiliated with the University of Calicut were held on Thursday.

A release from the SFI said that the organisation had been able to win the elections in seven colleges, which it had lost to its rivals last year. Some of the major colleges where the SFI won this time include the Malabar Christian College, Government Law College, and the Government Arts and Science College, Kozhikode, the release said.

Meanwhile, functionaries of the UDSF alleged that SFI activists assaulted KSU activists in some places in the district after the declaration of results. They also alleged that in places such as Perambra, the attack was carried out by activists of the CPI(M) and the Democratic Youth Federation of India. Some of the major campuses where the front won include St. Joseph’s College, Devagiri, and Zamorin’s Guruvayoorappan College, both in Kozhikode city, the UDSF leaders said.
