A village administrative officer (VAO), of Peraiyur in Madurai district, died in Bodi, Theni district, after he was caught in a flash flood on Thursday (October 9, 2025). Madurai Veeran had reportedly gone to Bodi with his friends to take a bath in the Oothampaarai river.
The police said that Balamuguran, a native of Theni district, had invited a few of his colleagues in Madurai district, including Madurai Veeran, to participate in a temple festival in his hometown in Theni.
He, along with Madurai Veeran and the other VAOs, who were identified as Saktivel, Sakkarai, and Muthukalai, went to Oothamparai river near Bodi for a bath on Thursday. At around 4 p.m., a flash flood in the river resulted in chaos, and all except Madurai Veeran were rescued safely.
The Fire and Rescue Services personnel searched for the missing VAO until 8 p.m. However, due to nightfall, they had to suspend the operation. On Friday (October 10) morning, the personnel spotted a body one kilometre away and identified the deceased as Madurai Veeran, the police said.
The Bodi Kurangani police registered a case. The Fire and Sescue Services personnel used a rope to carry the body to a vehicle nearby, and shifted it to a government hospital. Further investigation is under way.
