Repair and strengthening work on the Sarangapani Memorial Bridge on the Mayiladuthurai–Kumbakonam Main Road are expected to be completed within 45 days, Backward Classes Welfare Minister Siva V. Meyyanathan said on Friday.
The Minister inspected the ongoing work at Cauvery Nagar in Mayiladuthurai district, accompanied by District Collector H. S. Srikanth, Poombuhar MLA Nivedha M. Murugan, and Mayiladuthurai MLA S. Rajakumar.
Mr. Meyyanathan said the Sarangapani Bridge, built in 1974 during the tenure of former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, had become dilapidated and required urgent repairs. Following a request from the district administration, the State government sanctioned ₹6 crore for its renovation.
“The 50-year-old structure has withstood heavy traffic for decades. The ongoing work is crucial to ensure safety and prevent accidents,” he said.
The project includes replacing damaged pillars, installing new hand railings, and strengthening the bridge. To ease congestion, a temporary pathway for two-wheelers and emergency vehicles is being created, and one-way traffic will be enforced from October 15 to 20.
