Member of Legislative Assembly representing Sullia Bhagirathi Murulya urged Union Minister of State for Railways V. Somanna to direct his Ministry to develop a full-fledged railway station at Kaniyoor in Kadaba taluk of Dakshina Kannada district in Karnataka by relocating the existing halt station to about 1 km east, at Yeladka, on the Hassan-Mangaluru line.

On October 15, the MLA met Mr. Somanna in Bengaluru along with representatives of Puttur-Subrahmanya Railway Users’ Association. She pointed out that Yeladka was identified as the ‘junction’ point for the proposed Kaniyoor-Kanhangad new railway line. The location, she said, has adequate land to develop a railway terminal with all necessary infrastructure, including pit lines, stabling lines, and coaching depot.

Upon developing such a terminal, the South Western Railway (SWR) would be able to operate long-distance trains from Kaniyoor, which is closer to Kukke Subrahmanya. The measure wold reduce congestion at Mangaluru Central and Mangaluru Junction stations, Ms. Murulya stated.

She pointed out that the SWR has already made it clear that it cannot develop a terminal station at the nearby Subrahmanya Road Railway Station for want of sufficient land.

The MLA said Kaniyoor, located adjacent to Manjeshwar-Puttur-Subrahmanya State Highway, has been the central place for a number of villages, including Belandur, Savanoor, Bellare, Kalmadka, Balila, Ninthikallu and Charvaka.

Though residents of these villages use the existing Kaniyoor Railway Station, only the Mangaluru-Subrahmanya Road-Mangaluru passenger train halts at this station for want of adequate platform length. The existing station cannot be developed to accommodate trains with more than 10 coaches as a rivulet and a railway over bridge limit land availability for development, the MLA said.

She pointed out that during the meter gauge era, Bengaluru-Mangaluru express trains used to halt at Kaniyoor.

Relocating Kaniyoor station to Yeladka and developing a full-fledged terminal would contribute immensely to the economic development of Kadaba taluk in her constituency, Ms. Murulya told the Minister.
