Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) workers on Saturday staged a protest against the Delhi government for failing to provide free LPG cylinders ahead of Deepavali.

Ahead of the election, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had promised in its manifesto to provide LPG cylinders for ₹500 each to women from low-income families, and one free cylinder each during Holi and Deepavali.

“Women in Delhi have reached the residence of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta in Shalimar Bagh to demand their free Diwali cylinder. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had given a guarantee to the people of Delhi that every household would receive a free cylinder on Holi and Diwali. But the BJP government has not fulfilled these promises yet,” AAP Delhi president Saurabh Bharadwaj said in an X post.

“Even during Holi, women in Delhi were waiting with hope that the BJP government would provide one free cylinder to every home – but it did not. Now Diwali is here, and women are still waiting to receive the free cylinder,” he added.

The BJP did not respond to the protest.

In March, when the AAP protested about women not getting the free cylinders before Holi, Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva had said that people understand that launching a major scheme like free gas cylinders requires administrative approvals and regulatory frameworks, which take some time.

He also said that free gas cylinders are already being distributed regularly in many BJP-ruled States and will soon be provided in Delhi as well.
