Ayushmann Khurrana has set the record straight about his upcoming film Thamma, co-starring Rashmika Mandanna and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, saying that contrary to popular speculation the story is not about vampires, but instead draws from Indian folklore and the concept of “betaalism”.
Ayushmann Khurrana explains the mystery behind Thamma; says, “There are no vampires, it’s about betaals”
Speaking to Bollywood Bubble ahead of the film’s release, Khurrana explained, “Thamma is about betaals, not vampires. In Indian mythology, a betaal is an evil spirit that haunts cremation grounds and possesses corpses. Hum isko bolte hain betalism – betaal hai, vampire nahi (We call this betaalism — it’s betaal, not vampire).”
He further added, “It’s based on Indian folklore. The film’s title Thamma is derived from Ashwatthama. Dinesh Vijan came up with the idea, and the most powerful betaal in our story is Thamma.”
Earlier promos had led many viewers to believe the film featured vampires, but Khurrana emphasised the difference, remarking in a chat with Galatta Plus, “We are high on comedy. We have different genres, different situations, and it’s a completely different story. There’s hardly any similarity.”
In the trailer, Rashmika’s character Tadaka introduces Nawazuddin’s Yakshasan as the world’s protector, who eventually turns rogue and becomes Thamma. Ayushmann plays Alok, whose life takes a turn when he appears transformed: his heartbeat gone and fangs emerging. What follows is described as a mix of horror, humour and heart. Key cast also includes Paresh Rawal and Sathyaraj.
As part of the production house Maddock Films’ Horror-Comedy Universe (which includes titles such as Stree, Bhediya and Stree 2), Thamma is scheduled to hit cinemas on October 21.
