With the onset of the Northeast monsoon, Chennai residents are grappling with pothole-ridden roads that have turned daily commutes into a test of endurance. From vehicles jolting through craters to hours-long traffic jams, the city’s infrastructure woes have only deepened with the rains.
Residents have flagged poor road conditions at several locations across the city, including Velachery-Tambaram Road, Sardar Patel Road, Rajiv Gandhi Salai, Anna Salai, and Gandhi Mandapam Road.
Many had even taken to social media to complain about the roads. “From “Bad” to “Worse” Whole pallikaranai roads looks like a cement factory !! Traffic advice: Bikers be very cautious while driving from Sengeniamman temple to Narayanapuram signal. @chennai_Highway @chennaicorp @kgbias Sun is shining, kindly take immediate steps to solve this,” said an X user.
According to the State Crime Records Bureau (SCRB), a total of 67,213 road accidents were reported in 2023 in Tamil Nadu, of which 171 were caused by bad roads — 54 persons were killed, 81 grievously injured in 74 accidents, and 68 persons sustained minor injuries in 40 accidents. Further, 242 accidents were attributed to bad weather, including 24 deaths and 160 persons injured in the same year.
