Ayushmann Khurrana has finally cleared the air around the much-talked-about “item numbers” in his upcoming film Thamma. During a recent interaction with Bollywood Hungama, the actor addressed the growing curiosity — and misconceptions — surrounding the film’s music, making it clear that these songs are integral to the narrative, not mere crowd-pullers.

When told that the film features “two item numbers,” Ayushmann was quick to correct with a laugh, “Three.” But he immediately clarified, “The minute we use the word ‘item number,’ you know it feels like a misfit. These are not item numbers. Let me tell you — all three songs are part of the story. Something is happening within the songs.”
Known for his thoughtful approach to scripts and his aversion to unnecessary glamourisation, Ayushmann went on to explain that the film’s dance tracks are woven seamlessly into its storytelling. “This will of course be shown in the film — what’s happening in the songs. It’s not like, ‘Now wait, now watch the song, now the fun will come.’ It’s not like that. It is part of the narrative,” he emphasized.
Making his stance crystal clear, the actor added, “It is not just like song and dance — ‘let’s do an item number now.’ I don’t even like the name ‘item number’ anyway. But there are three dance numbers basically, and they’re very intrinsic to the film.”
Nawazuddin Siddiqui, who also stars in the film, shared his own take on the subject, reflecting on how such songs have often been treated as add-ons in commercial cinema. “At that time, the thought is that it’s an added item number — ‘let’s put an item number now,’” he admitted, highlighting the shift the current generation of filmmakers and actors are bringing to how songs are integrated into modern storytelling.
With Thamma the highly anticipated Diwali release Ayushmann and Nawazuddin seem determined to redefine audience expectations, even in how a film’s music is perceived. Rather than using songs as mere spectacle, the team appears intent on making each number serve a narrative purpose.
