Aparnadi is 80? How beautiful is that! I’ve had quite a few interactions with her over the years, and I think it’s her aura that’s most striking. I’d purely call it her guts and confidence — the clarity with which she conducts herself. It’s just wonderful and deeply inspiring.

Your favourite Aparna Sen directorials?
Her films — 36 Chowringhee Lane, Paroma, The Japanese Wife, Mr & Mrs Iyer — are all such powerful statements. They deal with strong social subjects yet are treated so cinematically and sensitively. 36 Chowringhee Lane and Paroma are still etched in my mind. She was so daring in her treatment, especially in 36 Chowringhee Lane.
I see echoes of her cinema in your films.
She’s been a pure inspiration. We all look up to her. Apart from being a gifted writer, screenwriter, and actress, what’s equally important is her sense of social commitment. She has always stood up for causes she believes in and has protested fearlessly whenever necessary. That kind of integrity is rare.
Your wishes for her birthday?
I just want to wish her all the very best. I truly hope that someday — and I think I still have time — I get to work with her. With her grace, intellect, and guts, she’s been an inspiration to so many women and men, both in Bengal and beyond.
