Thoothukudi Lok Sabha MP Kanimozhi on Sunday laid foundation for a multi-purpose relief centre and government model school to be constructed on an outlay of ₹10.15 crore on the government ITI premises at Ayyanadaippu village in Thoothukudi district.
The project is being implemented by the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department under the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF).
Collector K. Elambahavath, Thoothukud Corporation Mayor Jegan Periyasamy, District Revenue officer A. Ravichandran and other officials were present.
Addressing the media later, Ms. Kanimozhi said the multi-purpose relief centre had been planned to accommodate around 1,000 people during cyclones and other natural disasters. The building had been designed in such a way that it would also be utilised as a government model school during normal periods, accommodating around 800 students.
“The area of the centre will be more than 20,000 sq. ft.,” she added.
Responding to a question on the electoral roll revision exercise, she said the Chief Minister had issued clear explanation and direction to DMK cadre to ensure that the kind of confusion that may have occurred in other States did not happen in Tamil Nadu.
“We must be vigilant in handling the issue because in many places, the process has been misused to deprive the voting rights of lakhs of people. We are determined that such situation should never arise in Tamil Nadu,” Ms. Kanimozhi said.
On the upcoming Bihar elections, Ms. Kanimozhi said, “Justice must win, democracy must win and the people must win, that is what people are rooting for and it should happen.”
