The Federation of All Farmers’ Association in Tamil Nadu has demanded the State Government to provide a solatium of ₹50 lakh each to the four women who were struck dead by lightning at Kaludur near Thittagudi in the district on October 16.
A resolution to this effect was adopted at a meeting of the associations held at Ariyanachi on Saturday.
In the resolution, the Association said that while the Government announced a compensation of ₹10 lakh each to the next of kin of victims in the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy and those who died in the Karur stampede, the compensation of ₹5 lakh for the victims of the lightning strike had come as a shock to the farming community.
The compensation should be enhanced to ₹50 lakh and a job should be provided to one member from each family.
The Association also demanded the Government to provide crop insurance for maize farmers in Thittakudi whose crops were damaged in 2024.
Representatives from various farmers’ association led by M. Arjunan, P.S. Palaniappan and R. Ram Pandian participated.
