Two people were killed and another was injured in a road accident in Royapettah when their bikes collided on the Peters Road bridge.
The deceased were identified as Syed Sardar Basha, 19, a private college student from Begum Sahib Street in Royapettah, and Kumaran, 49, a resident of the same area who was on the road at the time of the accident.
According to the police, Syed and his friend Suhail, an employee at a mobile phone shop, were allegedly racing on their motorcycles on Peters Flyover in Royapettah on Wednesday (November 5, 2025) night.
The duo was reportedly speeding on high-end motorcycles from Royapettah towards Anna Salai when they suddenly lost control and collided with Kumaran’s bike, which was coming from the opposite direction. The impact threw both motorcycles several metres apart.
One of the racing bikes struck another motorcyclist travelling in the opposite direction, throwing him off his vehicle. He was wearing a helmet and reportedly escaped with minor injuries.
Syed and Kumaran died on the spot, while Suhail sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a hospital for treatment.
Traffic police have registered a case and launched an investigation. They are also probing how the young men managed to conduct the bike race on the flyover, which had been barricaded by the police the previous night. CCTV footage from the area is under examination.
Investigations revealed that Kumaran, one of the victims, owned a fancy store in T. Nagar and was returning home after work when the accident occurred. His relatives alleged that illegal bike races frequently take place in Royapettah and nearby areas and blamed the police for failing to monitor the situation.
Meanwhile, investigations into Suhail’s social media profiles revealed that he had been participating in bike races for some time. He had reportedly uploaded several reels of himself and friends racing on major roads across Chennai on various high-end motorcycles, the police said.
