The trustees of Shri Mahaveer Jain International Mission, Chennai, donated a van to the Gurupriya Vision Research Foundation, the charitable arm of Radhatri Nethralaya tertiary eye-care hospital, on Saturday. Rajasthan Ratna Subash Chand Ranka, along with trustees Kishan Srisrimal Jain, Giresh Bhandari, Nirmal Nahar and Niranjan Solanki, flagged off the vehicle.
Praveen Krishna, Medical Director, said the van would be used to transport preterm babies from underprivileged families, affected by Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP), from rural areas to the hospital.
Vasumathy Vedantham, Medical Director, said that ROP was the leading cause of childhood blindness in middle-income countries and highlighted the shortage of paediatric retina specialists in India. She said rural screening requires teleophthalmology and hand-held retinal cameras.
