The Delhi government introduced colour-coded bedsheets for each day of the week on Wednesday to ensure hygiene standards are met at all government hospitals in the Capital.
Announcing the initiative, Delhi Health Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh said that the system was designed not only to streamline linen management but also to provide a “visual assurance of cleanliness” to patients and their families.
The government hospitals will use white sheets on Monday, pink on Tuesday, green on Wednesday, purple on Thursday, blue on Friday, light grey on Saturday, and peach on Sunday, the minister added.
“The well-being of our patients is our top priority. This is a simple yet crucial step to create an environment of trust and transparency. This initiative will not only reduce Hospital Acquired Infection (HAI) rates but also have a positive psychological impact,” Mr. Singh said, addressing the mediapersons.
The initiative is a direct application of the principles outlined in the Kayakalp implementation guidebook, which highlights the significance of proper linen management in preventing healthcare-associated infections.
The guidebook mandates strict protocols for handling dirty and soiled linen, separate transportation, and washing in hot water with detergent. The new colour-coding system will simplify adherence to these protocols, making it easier for staff to manage linen cycles and maintain the highest standards of hygiene.
Kayakalp, the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare initiative, promotes cleanliness and hygiene and prevents HAI in public health facilities.
