The Vepery police arrested a 33-year-old man for attacking his wife on Friday.
The Greater Chennai Police said Augustine Joshua of Parthasarathy Street in Purasawalkam began abusing his wife within a few days of their marriage, and they quarrelled frequently. On Thursday night, Joshua assaulted her with a hammer during a quarrel, and locked her in a room. However, she called up her sister and informed her of the incident.
Her family members rushed to her house and rescued her.
She was admitted to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital.
Based on a complaint from her family members, the Vepery police arrested Joshua under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005.
