Five people go missing while taking a dip in Brahmaputra

Five of a nine-member group are missing after they reportedly ventured into the Brahmaputra River off Guwahati’s Kharghuli area on Monday (December 10, 2025) afternoon. The nine included an American national.

An official of the National Disaster Response Force said four rescue boats and a number of personnel were deployed after information was received about the missing people at 12:50 p.m.

“We did not find any trace of the missing people. The search will resume tomorrow (Thursday),” the official said.

Pranav Nayar, a survivor who managed to swim to safety, said the group had split just before the incident. “The five who went missing had gone to a different spot. The four of us knew how to swim,” he said.

Another survivor, Keshav Verma, said they had ventured into the river where the water level was knee-deep. “A sudden shift in water depth triggered the mishap,” he said.

One of the survivors was identified as American national Jacob Knutsen. Police said they were taken to a nearby hospital for a health check.

The Brahmaputra is fabled as an unpredictable river, often serene on the surface but turbulent beneath.
