Avaniyapuram residents seek permission for village general committee to organise jallikattu event

Residents of Avaniyapuram during the weekly grievance meeting held here on Monday requested permission for the village general committee to organise and conduct the traditional, century-old jallikattu event.

Speaking to press, the village committee members expressed their dissatisfaction, stating that for the past six years, the government has ignored their repeated requests to allow the village committee to manage the event.

While the jallikattu event has been held annually in Avaniyapuram, Madurai, to mark the Pongal festival, court orders resulting from various lawsuits have led to the competition being conducted by a district administration committee for the last six years, they added.

They stated that the residents of Avaniyapuram were dissatisfied with the government continuing to conduct the jallikattu event.

“Under the guise of peace committee meetings, village residents are continuously subjected to harassment. We have come to meet District Collector K.J. Praveen Kumar to demand that the government step aside and let the village general committee organise the event this year. Despite emphasising this demand for several years, no action has been taken, leaving the people of Avaniyapuram deeply frustrated,” they added.

Mr. Praveen Kumar assured them that he would take up the matter with the higher officials.
