All bridges, vital roads to be under strict vigilance to check New Year revellers in Madurai city

Madurai City Police will bring all bridges in the city under strict vigilance to prevent rash riding and performing stunts with two-wheelers by revellers during New Year celebrations.

In a statement, Madurai City Commissioner of Police J. Loganathan said that 1,500 policemen, led by five Deputy Commissioners of Police would be deployed at all important roads, junctions and places of worship and crowded places to prevent crime.

The policemen would be involved in vehicle checking. Two-wheeler and four-wheeler patrols would go around the city and provide bandobust at the places of worship.

The Commissioner instructed the restaurants and recreational clubs to get prior permission from the police to organise events to welcome the New Year.

All the celebrations should be wound up by 1 a.m. The organisers should also instal closed-circuit television cameras to ensure safety and security for women and children, the statement said.

Special teams have been formed to keep a tab on the activities of anti-social elements and history-sheeters.

In order to prevent drunk driving/riding and youths performing stunts on bikes threatening the members of the public, police picketing would be posted at all important roads and bridges, especially on the New Natham Road Exprese highway, A.V. Bridge, Velunachiyar flyover, all the bridges across Vaigai river, Mudakkuchalai flyover, Kalavasal flyover and the Vaigai Bank Roads

The Commissioner warned the trouble-mongers who obstruct free flow of traffic and disturb others with stringent action.
