Overall crimes dropped by 11% in Vizag this year, says Police Commissioner

Visakhapatnam saw a decline in crimes by 11.78 % in 2025 when compared to the previous year. Although the number of road accidents has declined, there has been no decrease in the number of deaths. When compared to previous years, cybercrime cases have seen a decline, while the recoveries and arrests in these cases have seen a rise.

Police Commissioner Shankhabrata Bagchi presented the annual crime report for 2025 during a media conference on Tuesday.

He said that the city reported 35 murders in 2025 as against 24 in 2024. Illicit intimacy was the motive behind nine murder cases, followed by five cases due to petty quarrels. The case of attempt to murder dropped from 159 in 2024 to 116 in 2025; rape cases declined from 126 in 2024 to 63 in 2025. Harassment cases against women reduced from 643 in 2024 to 499 in 2025.

The city saw 183 house break-in cases in 2025 as against 315 in 2024. There were 30 cases of robbery this year, while it was 43 in the previous year.

Mr. Bagchi said that stolen properties worth over ₹10.59 crore were recovered by the police this year. Around 8.6 kg gold, 16.1 kg silver, ₹66 lakh in cash, 186 motorcycles and other valuables were handed to 4,979 rightful owners.

Road accidents

Mr. Bagchi said 1,086 road accidents were reported in 2025, in which 349 persons died and 1,038 persons were injured. In 2024, the city recorded 1,132 road accidents, in which 347 people were killed and 1,156 persons were injured.

As per the statistics provided by the Police Commissioner, 420 road accidents were reported from the NH-16, claiming 149 lives and injuring 388 people. Internal roads suggests 410 road accidents were reported, in which 106 people died and 378 were injured.

While 34 people died and 119 were injured in road accidents on the BRTS Road stretches, 16 people died on Port Road. Beach Road stretch saw 52 road accidents in which 11 people died and 68 injured.

The NDPS cases saw a decline from 313 in 2024 to 226 in 2025. Mr. Bagchi said 10,147.590 kg of seized ganja, 19.310 litres of hashish oil, one kg of opium, all worth around ₹5.29 crore were destroyed this year.

The city also saw a decline in cybercrime cases from 409 in 2023, 376 in 2024, to 286 in 2025. There was an increase in the arrests of cybercrime offenders from 160 in 2024 to 205. An amount of ₹14,64,92,382 was refunded to 1,020 victims of cybercrimes. This is the maximum amount refunded to cybercrime victims in a year in any district of the State, Mr. Bagchi said.

The CP added that about ₹56 lakh was refunded to 126 victims of online load app fraud in the year 2025.
