The New Year 2026 celebrations in Greater Chennai limits passed peacefully without any loss of lives, accidents, crimes, or untoward incidents, following extensive security and preventive arrangements made by the city police.
Acting on the instructions of Greater Chennai Police Commissioner A. Arun, elaborate security measures were put in place to ensure that the public could celebrate the New Year’s eve safely.
A total of 19,000 police officers and personnel, including law and order police, crime branch, traffic police, armed reserve, and Tamil Nadu Special Police, along with 1,500 Home Guards, were deployed across the city. Vehicle checks were conducted at various locations, traffic was regulated, and one-way routes were implemented to prevent congestion.
To prevent accidents, flyovers were closed during night hours and barricades were erected along beach areas to prevent the public from entering into sea. Police assistance centres and temporary shelters were also set up.
A senior police officer said, “Police personnel were engaged in intensive monitoring and continuous patrolling to ensure public safety. Due to the sustained and coordinated efforts of the Greater Chennai Police on December 31, 2025, the New Year 2026 celebrations in the city were held peacefully and safely. Members of the public have widely appreciated the police for their effective bandobust and vigilance.”
City Commissioner Mr. Arun also inspected the security arrangements along with senior police officers at places including Marina Beach and Kamarajar Salai.
He commended the police officers, personnel, and Home Guards for their “exemplary” service.
