For Anukul Roy, personal milestones are always secondary to his team’s success.

Whether with the bat or ball, the 27-year-old believes in delivering his best for the team. A quintessential team man, Anukul was one of the heroes for Jharkhand in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) triumph, with 303 runs, 18 wickets and nine catches.

In the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy, Anukul has already played a game-changing knock with the bat — an unbeaten 98 against Pondicherry — and has tied down the batters in the middle overs with his disciplined bowling.

“You can’t court success without hard work. For me it began in the pre-season camp we had before the Buchi Babu Trophy. I know my role in the team and I tweak my game according to match situations. I stick to the basics and bowl to the field. While batting I ensure that I don’t get bogged down and don’t mind taking the odd risk. We were in a spot against Pondicherry. But credit to (captain Kumar) Kushagra for making it easier for me. I knew I had the shots to finish the innings on a high,” said Anukul.

“It has been a great season for Jharkhand. The icing on the cake was definitely the SMAT title win. It was easily the biggest moment in my career. The Player-of-the-Series award was a bonus. But we still have some unfinished business to do this season. For me I would like to play regularly in (the) IPL. Right now I am the second- or third-choice spinner in my IPL team (Kolkata Knight Riders), but I want to be the premier spinner and will work hard to reach that level,’’ said the former India under-19 player.
