A 26-year-old man was arrested by the Neredmet police in connection with an incident involving unlawful entry into Katta Maisamma temple in Safilguda and an alleged insult to religious beliefs.
The accused, identified as Altaf, a resident of Hugeri in Bidar district of Karnataka, was taken into custody and produced before a court on Sunday (January 11). The magistrate remanded him to judicial custody, police said.
According to the police, the incident was reported on the night of January 10, when the accused entered the temple premises without authorisation and committed indecent acts in front of the idol.
Police officials said they are currently verifying the antecedents and history of the accused and that further action would be taken strictly in accordance with the law.
In an appeal to the public, the police urged citizens not to believe or circulate rumours or unverified information on social media or through other means, warning that misinformation could lead to unnecessary panic and disturb public peace. People have been asked to rely only on official information released by the police.
