Operating two special trains with additional unreserved coaches from Tirunelveli and Nagercoil on Sunday helped unplanned travellers find some space to travel to Tambaram from southern districts.

One special train was operated between Thoothukudi and Mettupalayam also.

Railway officials from Commercial Department, Railway Protection Force and Government Railway Police were posted in adequate numbers for managing the crowd of passengers at important railway stations like Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Madurai, Tenkasi, Virudhunagar, Dindigul. “Unlike the regular express trains that has only four general coaches, the two special trains from Tirunelveli and Nagercoil had eight unreserved coaches that provided additional space for last-minute travellers returning to Chennai after Pongal holidays,” a railway official said.

Though lot of passengers had returned to Chennai even on Friday and Saturday, the crowd of passengers was higher than the usual Sunday crowd, he added.

The officials at Madurai helped the passengers with unreserved tickets form proper queue to board the general coaches of all the trains, including the Pandyan Express.

By getting inputs from officials from stations like Sattur, Virudhunagar, Sivakasi about the crowd in unreserved coaches of all trains, the officials in Madurai guided the passengers to board the less-crowded trains.
