Coconut farmers are understood to be facing a setback due to the price fluctuations in the open market.

Though there is a semblance of stability in the cost of coconuts sold through the ‘Uzhavar Sandhais’ where the price ranges between ₹50 and ₹60 per kg, farmers allege that middlemen are the cause for the lower costs in the open market.

“There is no reason for the decrease in the cost of coconut or copra at this juncture. The production has been hit, and the supply has not improved. Middlemen are manipulating the demand-supply dynamics,” Jagadeesan, an Udumalpet-based coconut farmer said.

According to officials of Department of Agricultural Marketing and Agri Business, the price has indeed come down from the extent that prevailed about two months ago.

The fluctuations in the cost of coconut at this time of the year is not unusual, an official pointed out.
