Constable dies as service weapon ‘misfires’

A constable attached to the Dhone Government Railway Police (GRP) outpost died as his service weapon reportedly misfired, at the Dhone railway police station in the early hours of Sunday.

P. Peddaiah had joined the police force as an AP Special Police (APSP) constable in 1995. In 2017, he was attached to the Armed Reserve (AR) and posted to the GRP on deputation.

As part of his duty, Peddaiah travelled from Guntakal to Dhone in the Hubli-Vijayawada Express on Saturday. Upon returning, he was depositing his SM carbine weapon in the lock-up room when it reportedly went off accidentally.

The weapon, which should have be in ‘Safety Catch’ mode, was in the ‘Single Mode’, leading to the misfire, the police said. As the weapon was loaded, one round of bullet pierced through Peddaiah’s left cheek, leading to his instantaneous death, the police added.

Peddaiah is survived by his wife, two daughters, and a son. “The family members have not raised any doubts over the death,” the police added.
