The Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) has decided not to offer its three-year LLB evening programme from the new academic year.
The varsity authorities pointed out that the Supreme Court and the Bar Council of India are not in favour of part-time programmes to maintain the quality of legal education. The decision to drop the programme offered by the School of Legal Studies from the notification for admission to the various programmes for the 2026-27 academic year was taken by the Syndicate recently in order to avoid legal complications, if any, in offering the evening course, they said. It is among the four academic programmes not on offer in the new academic year.
As per the official website of the varsity, the course was run in the evening as an academic course having no prospects to enrol as a lawyer. The objective was aimed at helping the employees to pursue their studies along with their jobs and to have an understanding of law. The three-year programme was divided into six semesters and the classes were held from 4.30 p.m to 9.30 p.m. The intake for the programme was 40. Candidates who had passed their bachelor’s degree with 50% marks in the aggregate (all subjects) in any discipline of a university recognised by the Cochin University of Science and Technology was eligible to apply. The admission was based on the performance in the Common Admission Test conducted by the varsity.
Besides the three-year LLB evening programme, the varsity has also dropped three other courses in the new academic year. It included MTech in Thermal Engineering offered by the School of Engineering Studies, MTech in Microwave and Communication Engineering offered by the Department of Electronics, and MTech in Data Science and Analytics offered by the Department of Statistics, according to the authorities. The decision not to offer the courses was taken because of a dip in demand. The authorities stated that some of the courses required a makeover in tune with the changing times.
The varsity has added three new programmes in the 2026-27 academic year to cash in on the demand for courses in niche areas and languages. It include BTech in Artificial Intelligence, five-year integrated MSc in Econometrics and a postgraduate integrated programme in Hindi.
