Anganwadi workers launched a relay hunger strike, in response to the call given by the Anganwadi Workers and Helpers Union, which is affiliated to the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU). The demonstrated near the Gandhi statue, near the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC), demanding an increase in wages on Tuesday.
CITU leader Kumar Mangalam, who inaugurated the relay hunger strike, said it was unfortunate that Telugu Desam Party (TDP) president N. Chandrababu Naidu, who had promised to hike salaries of anganwadi workers before the elections, had failed to do so after assuming office as Chief Minister. He added that the prices of essential commodities had skyrocketed over the past six years, while the wages of anganwadi workers had remained the same, causing them untold hardships. The indifference of the State government towards their woes, he said, forced anganwadi workers to launch the relay hunger strike.
