The number of organ donors and cadaver transplants performed in Andhra Pradesh has registered a significant increase in the last five years, indicating a growing awareness among prospective donors and their family members.
Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav has commended Jeevandan Andhra Pradesh for achieving the milestone of completing 200 organ transplants on September 7, three months ahead of the target. This was made possible through 61 donors.
In a post on the social media platform ‘X’, the Health Minister congratulated the Jeevandan officials, the donors and their family members for coming forward to donate the organs of their near and dear ones, overcoming personal grief.
“Jeevandan A.P. has collected 1,195 organs from 371 donors since 2015 and transplanted them to the needy. In total, 4,796 persons have registered their names on the Jeevandan portal, awaiting transplantation. The more people come forward to donate organs, the more number of needy families will be benefited,” he said.
Parents of Vipin Mehta, a young man who had become brain-dead after a road accident, had donated his organs. “My son had given the gift of life to four people. I appeal to everyone to pledge to donate their organs. I will also donate mine,” Vipin’s father said at an awareness meeting organised by Jeevandan A.P.
Teja, an organ recipient, narrated his tale of woes. “I had been suffering from a kidney ailment since childhood. On the advice of my relatives, I registered my name with Jeevandan A.P., seeking a kidney. After a wait of four years, I found a donor and the surgery was performed,” he said.
“Please donate organs and save lives. There are several others like me waiting in the queue,” he said at the programme.
The number of donors increased from 41 in 2023 to 66 in 2024 and the number of organs transplanted has gone up from 126 to 210. “This year, 61 donors have donated their organs and 200 transplantations have been done so far,” Dr. K. Rambabu, Jeevandan, AP, Coordinator and Director of Visakha Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS) told The Hindu.
“Though awareness is increasing among the people, the gap between demand and supply of organs is vast. We are trying to create awareness among all sections of people by holding awareness meetings to dispel the myths on organ donation, the need to donate organs, when some one is declared brain-dead,” he says.
