The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday alleged that the Rekha Gupta-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Delhi has handed over the construction of 11 hospitals launched by the previous government during the COVID-19 period to private companies.
“These hospitals have 10,073 beds, including 4,314 ICU beds. They were being built for the people of Delhi to provide free treatment. Are land and buildings worth thousands of crores being handed over to corporates?” AAP Delhi president Saurabh Bharadwaj said in a post on X.
There was no official reaction from the BJP over the allegations at the time of going to press.
The former Delhi Health Minister said the Capital suffers from a shortage of government-run healthcare institutions.
“As stated a few months ago, the BJP government is handing over 11 government hospitals started by the Arvind Kejriwal government to private entities. Why are hospitals built with public money being converted into private hospitals when there is no shortage of private hospitals, and what people actually need are government hospitals? The BJP prepared a false budget of ₹1 lakh crore, yet does the government really have no money to build hospitals?” Mr. Bharadwaj said in another post.
In July, Ms. Gupta said that seven under-construction ICU hospitals commissioned by the previous AAP government during the pandemic will be turned into super-speciality medical facilities.
