The Udupi District Police have taken action against 11 vehicles that were allegedly found transporting sand, laterite stones and m-sand illegally, since December 6. A total of 3,966 vehicles were checked at the 29 police check-posts set up to prevent illegal transport of sand, laterite stones and m-sand, Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar has said.

In a press release, the SP said since December 6, personnel were posted at the check-posts where continuous checking of vehicles transporting sand and other two construction materials was being done.

Eleven vehicles were found transporting material without paying royalty to the government and without necessary transport permits. A case was registered against the driver and owner of a vehicle for alleged illegal transportation of sand in Manipal Police Station. In the remaining 10 cases, material was seized and matter was referred to Mines and Geology Department for further action. The Department has imposed penalty totalling to ₹3.08 lakh on the vehicle owners.

Tough action will continue against those illegally transporting sand, laterite stones and m-sand, the SP added.
