Adyar river restoration project to begin soon, says Health Minister

The stretch of Adyar river between Thiru. Vi. Ka bridge and Saidapet would be restored soon as tender has been floated for the ₹1,500-crore project, Health Minister Ma. Subramanian said here on Thursday.

He was reviewing the ongoing works to clear sand deposits in Adyar river mouth. The project would include components such as strengthening of river banks and riverfront development. Work would commence soon to build 1,701 tenements in Nagi Reddy Thottam to resettle residents of areas, including Jothiammal Nagar.

Measures are being taken to minimise flood risk in areas along the river banks. Work is in progress to dredge Adyar river mouth till the year-end to enable draining of a minimum of 40,000 cubic feet per second of flood water. South Chennai MP Thamizhachi Thangapandian and other government officials were also present, said a press release.

Excess sewage load

Meanwhile, Chennai Metrowater pumped and treated an additional load of nearly 825.47 million litres of sewage on Wednesday, compared to its usual daily load of 650-690 mld.

It has also hired nearly 91 sewer lorries to clear waterlogging and sewage during heavy rainfall days.

An additional 632 street tanks have been installed to facilitate drinking water supply to relief camps and community kitchens set up by the Greater Chennai Corporation, said a press release.
