Alleging rampant corruption in the city planning section of Madurai Corporation, AIADMK urban district secretary Sellur K. Raju warned the ‘corrupt’ officials of legal action after the AIADMK returned to power.

Participating in a protest demonstration condemning the Madurai Corporation administration for multi-crore property tax corruption and poor roads in the city here on Wednesday, the former Minister complained of irregularities in open space reservations while approving residential layouts.

Besides, the city planning officials have given permission for setting up three cinema theatres in a mall located in K.K. Nagar.

The crowd coming to the theatres would face safety risk if the three theatres were allowed in a cramped space, he said.

The former Minister also wondered how sewage was getting mixed with drinking water pipeline of the newly launched Mullaperiyar drinking water scheme. He attributed this to poor quality of work executed by the officials.

Mr. Raju also complained about large-scale corruption in levying property tax for commercial buildings and marriage halls.

The AIADMK leader said that the DMK had failed Madurai city by not bringing development works. Even the Tidel Park which was proposed for ₹600 crore was only now coming up only at a cost of ₹280 crore.

The city was struggling with strewn garbage, pothole-filled roads and poor drainage system, he said.

Speaking on the occasion, the former Mayor V.V. Rajan Chellappa criticised the Chief Minister M.K. Stalin for his inability to find a Mayoral candidate for Madurai city.

He flayed the State Ministers P. Moorthi and Palanivel Thiaga Rajan, and the DMK urban district secretary G. Thalapathi for the poor state of Corporation affairs.

AIADMK leaders M.S. Pandian, R. Annadurai, Corporation councillors Solai M. Raja, K. Shanmugavalli, K. Rubini Kumar, J. Muthumari, were among those who spoke.
