Alok Kumar, Director-General of Police (DGP), Prisons and Correctional Services, on Monday inspected the Central Prison for the first time after assuming office and vowed to address the perennial issues there.
Mr. Kumar inspected all the cells, as well as the parking space, bakery, and shops located outside the prison.
Referring to repeated seizures of mobile phones inside the prison while speaking to presspersons after the inspection, Mr. Kumar said there was a need to get to the root of the problem and understand the network through which mobile phones are being smuggled into prisons.
“About 151 cases related to prisons have been registered, and 72 have been chargesheeted, but there is a need for a deeper investigation to understand the issue. We will do this and identify the channels through which mobile phones and banned items are being supplied,” Mr. Kumar said.
He said action had already been initiated against those involved in earlier cases, and a 15-day deadline has now been issued to officers to plug all gaps in the system. If any case emerges after this period, stringent action will be taken, he added.
Mr. Kumar also said he interacted with murder accused and Kannada actor Darshan and enquired if there were any issues. However, Darshan reported no problems, according to Mr. Kumar.
Further, he instructed officials to fix issues related to network jammers around prisons and to identify and address blackspots within prison premises.
