Even as the controversy over the alleged misappropriation of gold at Sabarimala temple continues to escalate, the Nair Service Society (NSS) is keeping its cards close to its chest, a sharp departure from its practice of speaking out decisively on matters concerning the Hindu community.
NSS general secretary G. Sukumaran Nair on Tuesday told the media that the investigation on the alleged misappropriation was being held under close scrutiny of both the court and the State government, leaving no room for the organisation to comment prematurely. “All responsible for the disappearance of the gold plates must be caught and punished without mercy,” he said.
The stance of the community organisation comes at a time when the NSS leadership itself is battling dissent at the grassroots level following its public endorsement of the Left Democratic Front government’s Global Ayyappa meet at Pampa last month.
To address these tensions, the NSS had planned a meeting of its union-level presidents and secretaries last Saturday. That meeting, however, had to be called off at the last minute, which again is almost unheard-of for the community organisation.
NSS sources, meanwhile, regard the present political uproar over the Sabarimala issue as driven more by partisan agendas than genuine concern. They also noted that the community organisation had received an assurance from the LDF government to act decisively on the issue before the upcoming local body elections.
“It is vital that both the government and the judiciary resolve it before political narratives take over. Commenting before the investigation concludes risks turning this into a political statement,” noted a source.
