A portion of a stone quarry in Uttar Pradesh’s Sonbhadra collapsed on Saturday evening (November 15, 2025), leaving several workers trapped under the rubble. At least one person was killed and around 15 others remain trapped as of early Sunday (November 16, 2025).
According to officials, one person’s body has been recovered so far as rescue teams continue operations at the site. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and a team of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) from Mirzapur also reached the site to assist rescue operations.
“A wall inside the Krishna Mines quarry in Billi Markundi village of Obra suddenly caved in, trapping the workers. Some workers are feared trapped under the debris,” a government official told The Hindu.
At least 10 labourers were present at the site when the incident occurred, as per locals. “The process of drilling holes in the rock was ongoing using machines when a portion of a rock cracked and collapsed,” one eyewitness said, speaking to mediapersons.
Rescue efforts are underway and the exact situation will be clear only after debris is removed, the official added. Senior district officials, including the District Magistrate (DM) and the Superintendent of Police (SP), reached the spot to monitor ongoing rescue operations.
Uttar Pradesh Minister and the local MLA, Sanjeev Kumar Gond, also visited the site.
He said that the circumstances under which the mine was operating will be investigated. “Strict action will be taken against those found guilty. We stand with the families of the victims.” Mr. Gond said.
