Belur residents clean temple, protest desecration of Ganesha idol

Residents of Belur town in Hassan district of Karnataka, on September 22, performed purification rituals at a Ganesha temple where the idol was desecrated on September 20 night.

The devotees carried water from the pond at the historic Channakeshava temple and cleaned the temple premises. The priests conducted homas and offered special prayers to Lord Ganesha in the presence of Belur MLA H.K. Suresh and others.

Protest against desecration

The residents, under the leadership of the MLA and others, took out a protest march condemning the incident. They marched in a procession from Channakeshava temple to Basaveshwara Circle. MLA H.K. Suresh of the BJP, former MLA K.S. Lingesh of the JD(S) and others participated in the protest.

A woman, a resident of Hassan town, allegedly desecrated the Ganesha idol at the temple on September 20 night. On September 21, Hassan police arrested Leelamma, who allegedly placed slippers on the idol. The woman is said to be mentally unstable.
