Bengaluru police have arrested a 21-year-old student of an engineering college in south Bengaluru for allegedly raping a senior female student on the campus.

The accused has been identified as Jeevan Gowda, a fifth-semester student at a private college in Basavanagudi. According to a senior police officer, the girl is a year senior to the accused, and the two had known each other for the past three months.

According to the FIR, the alleged incident took place on October 10 during lunch break inside the men’s washroom in the college.

The girl stated that she attended class at 8.55 a.m. on the day of the alleged incident. She had to collect a few items from Jeevan Gowda, and informed him that she would meet him later in the day. During the lunch break, Jeevan Gowda reportedly called her and asked her to meet him downstairs in their block.

When she met him, he allegedly took her to the seventh floor of the architecture block, where he allegedly forced himself on her.

“I left the place and came to the sixth floor where he pulled me into the men’s washroom and locked the door,” she told the police.

According to the complaint, Jeevan Gowda took her phone and kept it in his pocket when her friend called. He then allegedly raped her inside the washroom. The alleged incident occurred between 1.30 p.m. and 1.50 p.m. Later that day, Jeevan Gowda allegedly called her again and asked whether she ‘wanted pills’, the FIR states.

Although the alleged incident occurred on October 10, the girl lodged a complaint on October 15 after informing her parents. She told the police that two of her friends had encouraged and supported her in disclosing the matter to her family, following which she filed the complaint.

The Hanumanthanagar police registered a case under Section 64 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to rape. Jeevan Gowda was arrested soon after the complaint was filed on October 15.

An officer told The Hindu that the accused is a fifth-semester student, while the victim is in the seventh semester. As she had a backlog in one subject, she used to attend a fifth-semester class, where she got acquainted with Jeevan Gowda.

“During interrogation, he has maintained that the act was consensual. We have recorded his statement and are investigating the case from all angles,” the officer said.
