A delegation of leaders from the ruling BJP on Monday (December 9, 2025) met Lieutenant Governor K. Kailashnathan and submitted a memorandum seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the functioning of illegal medicine manufacturing firms in Puducherry.
BJP Puducherry president V.P. Ramalingam, in the memorandum, stated that the CB-CID police had recently unearthed two illegal drug manufacturing units in Mettuplayam and Sedarapet. The units allegedly operated for four years, manufactured fake and substandard drugs, and conducted multi-crore inter-State business.
“Given the scale, financial complexity, and potential high-level collusion, the investigation demands an authority beyond local capacity. A probe by the CBI is crucial to thoroughly investigate the entire network, and we specifically request that the investigation prioritise the disclosure and tracing of the illegal supply chain across India. It was necessary to unearth the source of precursor chemicals and the distribution channels of the illegal drug mafia,” the memorandum stated.

In addition to cracking down on illegal drug manufacturing, it is essential to simultaneously increase access to quality and affordable medicines through legal channels, the BJP said. The Lt. Governor should intervene to significantly increase the presence of Pradhan Mantri Bharatiya Janaushadhi Kendras in Puducherry. The establishment of the outlets will provide access to low-cost quality medicines, the memorandum further stated.
