Thrissur witnessed heightened political tensions on Wednesday (August 13, 2025) as BJP workers marched to the City Police Commissioner’s office to protest against the alleged attack on party workers and the camp office of Union Minister and Thrissur MP Suresh Gopi by CPI(M) activists.

The march, led by former BJP State president K. Surendran and State general secretary Shobha Surendran, was blocked by police barricades near the Commissioner’s office. BJP workers climbed onto the barricades waving party flags, refusing to disperse despite the police using water cannon thrice. A public meeting followed, inaugurated by Mr. Surendran.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Surendran warned that the BJP would strongly resist any attempts by the LDF and the Congress to “trample upon” the mandate given by the people of Thrissur.

Ms. Shobha Surendran condemned the vandalism at Suresh Gopi’s office, where black oil was poured on the signboard, calling it “an insult to democracy and to the discerning voters of Thrissur.”

The unrest follows Tuesday evening’s clashes in the city amid the ongoing controversy over alleged voter list fraud. CPI(M) workers had earlier taken out a protest march to Mr. Gopi’s office, prompting BJP workers to rally to the CPI(M) office in retaliation. Violence erupted as workers from both sides pelted stones, injuring five BJP activists.

Suresh Gopi, who reached Thrissur on Wednesday morning, did not participate in the BJP protest march.
