Brazil’s lower house on Thursday (December 18, 2025) stripped lawmaker Eduardo Bolsonaro, one of the sons of former President Bolsonaro, of his seat after he missed more than one-third of deliberative sessions this year.
Eduardo Bolsonaro left Brazil in February for the United States to drum up international support, especially from the Trump administration, for his father.
Brazilian law requires lawmakers who miss at least one-third of deliberative sessions in a year to lose their seat.
The former President Jair Bolsonaro was sentenced in September to 27 years and three months in prison for plotting a coup after losing Brazil’s 2022 election.
U.S. President Donald Trump imposed steep tariffs on Brazilian goods and sanctions on Brazilian authorities earlier this year due to what he called a “witch hunt” against Bolsonaro.

But he began to reverse some tariffs and sanctions in the last few weeks following concerns about U.S. inflation and after holding talks with Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
Eduardo Bolsonaro was charged by Brazil’s federal police with coercion related to his actions in the U.S. attempting to influence sanctions and pressure the country’s Supreme Court.
